Qitan Tech to Mass Produce Nanopore Genome Sequencers, First in China

BEIJING, December 10 (TMTPOST) — Chengdu Qitan Tech launched its nanopore genome sequencer QNome-3841 on Friday, which is the first made-in-China nanopore sequencer that will soon enter mass production.

The product launch makes Qitan Tech the only genome sequencer producer in China to adopt the fourth-generation genome sequencing technology and the second company across the globe to enter commercialization in this field. Qitan Tech’s QNome-3841 will break the monopoly of overseas genome sequencer makers over the Chinese market.

Founded in 2016, Chengdu-based Qitan Tech specializes in the R&D of nanopore genome sequencer, relevant reagent and consumables. The company completed its B round financing by reaping 400 million yuan in June this year. The financing was led by GL Ventures and CDH Venture and Growth Capital, and backed by BioTrack Capital, Huagai Capital and Riverhead Capital.

QNome-3841 is a small-throughput sequencer, Qitan Tech’s co-founder and chief scientist Bai Jingwei introduced at the product launch. QNome-3841 can generate 1-1.5Gb of data in eight hours with a 90% accuracy in one sequencing read and achieve a 99.9% accuracy rate in consistency. The fourth-generation genome sequencer’s advantage lies in long read. Qitan Tech’s QNome-3481 can perform genome sequencing experiments that require a read longer than 300Kb.

The product is suitable for small labs and outdoor use because of its small size and capability in real-time and direct sequencing.

The mass production of QNome-3481 marks China’s progress in the nanopore genome sequencing field, which has been dominated by overseas companies for a long time.

Nanopore sequencing is a third-generation approach used in the sequencing of biopolymers- specifically, polynucleotides in the form of DNA or RNA. Using nanopore sequencing, a single molecule of DNA or RNA can be sequenced without the need for PCR amplification or chemical labeling of the sample. Oxford Nanopore was the company that produced the world’s first nanopore genome sequencer.
