Contemporary Amperex Energy Service Technology Ltd. (CAES), a CATL subsidiary founded less than half a year ago, released EVOGO, a battery swap solution featuring modular battery swapping, at its first online launch event on Tuesday.
EVOGO consists of fast battery swap stations, an app and the most compelling part--Choco-SEB (swapping electric block), a chocolate bar-shaped mass produced battery specially developed for EV battery sharing and characterized by high-energy density with small size, on-demand applicable combination and minimalist design.

Empowered by CATL’s latest CTP (cell to pack) technology, the block can achieve a weight energy density of over 160 Wh/kg and a volume energy density of 325 Wh/L, enabling a single block to provide a driving range of 200 km. It is compatible with 80 percent of global battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform-based vehicle models available on the market, ranging from Class-A00, Class-B, and Class-C passenger cars to logistics vehicles, and all BEV platform-based models to be released in the next three years globally.

With the coverage equivalent to just three parking space, the EVOGO battery swap station can house up to 48 Choco-SEBs and allows one-minute swapping for a single battery block, ensuring fully charged batteries for customers at any time without a long wait. Unlike traditional solutions, the swap stations can match all vehicle models by different OEMs that use Choco-SEBs, allowing a free choice of vehicle models for battery swaps. In order to address EV owners’ range anxiety about power capacity, EVOGO allows customers to decide how many battery blocks they want to rent based on different driving demands and their own habits.
CAES announced the modular battery swap version of Bestune NAT as the first member of the EVOGO family and said more EVOGO-powered vehicle models would come in the future. It plans to initially launch EVOGO services in ten selected cities in China.
China has offered government subsidy to new energy passenger vehicles with swappable batteries which cost under RMB300,000 last year and began to implement its first national standard for EV battery replacement safety in November, suggesting the onset of a full-fledged battery swap market. The market of the whole batter swap industrial chain would top RMB300 billion by 2025, as the sales of passenger cars and commercial vehicles with swappable batteries are expected to be more than 2.8 million units and 500,000 units respectively and about 28,000 supporting battery swap stations are in demand as well as the demand for batteries with about 55GWh capacity accordingly, according to China’s investing firm Founder Securities.
