BEIJING, September 7 (TMTPOST) – "In the past few years, car companies have been deeply aware of the impact of the chip shortage on our development, but most companies have not recognized that the lack of operating systems will be a fatal problem," said Miao Wei, deputy director of the Economic Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, at the China EV 100 Forum 2022.
Because the global smart car development pattern is not yet set, there are about three years of critical window period left for China to build an independently controllable, open source operating system free of charge.
Automotive software is evolving from the past embedded software development-oriented to full-stack software development, the operating system will play a top-down role, and can be responsible for the internal management and external interaction. In this process, Google"s Android operating system is starting to enter car companies through the car system, and the next step will be further penetration into the chassis system and so on, Miao added.
He feared that in three to five years, the global smart car market would resemble the development of the smartphone market, where Tesla, like Apple, would create a closed-loop, non-open operating system, while most smart cars would adopt an open-source, and all-free operating system.
He believes that China must have a backup plan because the United States will not stop the containment of China. The history of the cell phone industry shows that in the process of converting functional products to smart products, no matter how strong the chip is and how well the car is made, it is still like a tall building on the beach without an operating system, according to Miao.
China accounts for about 1/3 of the global annual production and sales of cars and more than half of the production of new energy vehicles. Every move of China is significant enough to influence the world. It is hoped that China can achieve another leadership in the global automotive operating system field after the 5G.
