3.1Warm-up(3

①What did you hear?(填空题)

Welcome to European History 101.

I'm Professor Johnson, and this semester you will learn a lot of interesting facts about

Europe.

But first, I'd like to talk about some important rules that I have.

First, you can use your computer during lecture, but only to take notes.

If I see that you're watching videos online, you won't be allowed to use your computer for the

rest of the semester.

Second, please put your cell phone away during lecture.

Don't use it to send or read text messages or to look at Facebook.

If you don't follow this rule, I will collect your phone and hold it until the end of class.

I don't give these rules because I am strict.

I have these rules because I want you to learn in class.

If you're too busy looking at other things, you can't learn.

Let's have a good semester with and without technology.

3.2Lisitening2

①Understand a conversation选择题)W: What are you doing tonight?M: I've got to help my mum set up her computer.W: Has she got a new one?M: Yes, it was her birthday, so we bought her a new computer that she wanted.W: Your mum can't set it up by herself?M: Not really. She gets frustrated about it all, so she'd rather have me do it.W: My mum's the same way. Even my dad asks me to help him with his computer problems

sometimes.M: I think they were unlucky. They didn't have much experience with computers when they

were young.W: Right. And my grandparents are even worse! They were surprised when I said I needed a new mouse. They thought it was an animal!M: How silly! My grandparents don't have a computer or even a mobile phone!W: That's amazing. I can't think of my life without a computer or mobile phone.M: I agree. I'd feel like I was missing a part of my body like an arm or leg.W: It's funny that our grandparents are perfectly happy without these things.M: I think they rather like their lives that way too.W: They say it's better to visit people and have a chat.M: My grandparents are very happy when I stop by to visit.W: I don't think I could be as happy as they are without my electronic things.M: I'd probably be bored, but maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to use them less.Questions:1. What is the man going to do tonight?2. Why does the man say their parents were unlucky?3. What do the speakers feel about a life without a computer or a mobile phone?4. What is the grandparents' attitude to electronic things?

②Understand a passage(选择题)Most of us seldom think about water.

We can find it everywhere we go.

It's also easy to use in our homes because the water comes directly to us.

It seems to be a small thing to think about, but many other people around the world must

think about it a lot.

In Africa, people cannot get water easily.

Water doesn't come to them; they must go to the water.

Sometimes they walk 30 minutes to get water and walk 30 minutes to return home.

When they arrive at a place to pump water, they must often wait in line.

It can be very slow for each person to get water.Almost all of those who are responsible for getting water are women.

They work very hard even though some of them are quite old.

Each woman puts the water in a plastic can.

When the plastic can is full, it weighs about 18 kilograms.

Then the woman must carry that heavy water on her head.

The road to the water station is not flat, so she cannot push or pull the can.

It must be carried, and it's easiest to carry on her head.

However, the women feel a lot of pain in their neck and back because the water is so heavy. It also makes them very tired because sometimes they get water two or three times in one

day, or they must walk farther if there's no more water nearby.

We don't think about water because we don't have to think about water, but these women

must think about it every day. Questions:1. Why do African women have to think about water every day?2. How does the speaker describe the place to pump water?3. Why do the women carry water on their heads? 4. Why do the women have pain in their neck and back?

3.4Specking—listening and specking6

Conversation-Task 1/2(填空M: My apartment's a mess!

I don't have time to organize my possessions and don't know how to start.

You're probably the best person to give me advice because your place is so neat and clean.

You don't have a desk with piles of books or papers, or clothes thrown in the corner of the

room. How can I be organized like you?W: First, pick one area to begin with, so you won't feel stressed about all the work.M: Good idea! I usually start to clean up, but there's too much stuff, so I just give up.W: Exactly, so pick a small area like your desk and give yourself one hour.

Review which papers are important and throw away anything you don't need or haven't

looked at for a long time.

You can also make digital copies of important documents to save on your computer.M: Great idea! I can throw away a lot of papers this way.

Should I keep my old books?W: If they're important for your studies, keep them.

The bookstore will give you some money if you sell books back to them.

You can give all the other books to second-hand bookstores.M: What about all my clothes?W: If there are any damaged clothes, throw them away.

If there are good clothes you haven't worn in two years, you'll never wear them, so give them to an organization that helps poor people.

Do the same thing with your shoes and hats, too.M: These are great tips!W: You'll see that being organized makes your life cleaner and much easier.

Passage-Task 1/2(填空Many parents think that their children spend too much time on the Internet.

They see their children sitting quietly at their computers typing on the keyboard all day long.

Parents say they wish their children would go outside to play or have a different activity like

playing sports, playing a musical instrument or reading a book. Parents are right, but they are also wrong to think that the Internet only has bad effects on

their children's lives.

The Internet has opened the world for everyone.

Now we are connected to anyone in the world.

In the past, our friends were only people who lived near us.

Now, if we live in the US, we can have a friend in Russia or South America.We can learn so much from around the world.

We can see pictures of people and places from different parts of the world.

We can learn about the events that are happening far away and can all be part of a

worldwide society now.The Internet is also a great source for children's education.

They can find information to research and write reports for school.

It is easy to do, and they don't have to go to the library to get this information.Parents are right.

Children must not spend their whole day on the computer.

They should do other important activities to make their lives enjoyable.

However, the Internet is not the enemy;it is a window to a big, wonderful world.

3.5Homework

News report 1(选择Is it possible to make people happier?

One country in the Middle East is trying to do this.

This country has created a new government position to study what makes people happy

around the world.

The government wants to use this information to make its citizens happier.

The government also wants to ask its citizens what makes them happy.

In fact, it has begun to include new departments that focus on happiness.

For example, even the police department has an office for happiness in the community.Some people complain that the government can't force people to be happy.

They also say the government hasn't fixed issues that make people unhappy.

For example, it's expensive to live and go to school; it's difficult to find jobs.

However, other people say that it's good for the government to think about the happiness of

its people.

After all, the people know what the government needs to change to make their lives more

successful and pleasant.Questions:1. What is one country in the Middle East trying to do?2. What do people complain about the government?

News report 2(选择

People from around the world can instantly recognize the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.

Seven million people actually visit the famous tower every year.

For the first time ever, four lucky families were able to sleep in the tower.

A conference room was changed into a temporary apartment.

It was created by a holiday rental company to celebrate the Euro football matches in Paris.

The apartment had a large television to watch the football games, and it had amazing views of the city.

The company announced an online competition to win a night in the apartment in the

Eiffel Tower.

Applicants had to answer the question: What would you do if you could spend a night in the Eiffel Tower apartment?

The company received more than 150,000 entries, and finally they chose four winners.

After the football matches were finished, the apartment was broken down.

What would you do if you could spend the night there?Questions:1. What were the four lucky families able to do?2. To win the contest, what did the families have to do?

Understanding passages(选择There is a lot of debate about which makes the better pet, a dog or a cat.

In the United States, there are more pet cats than pet dogs; however, most Americans will

say that dogs are better than cats.

There are many reasons why dogs seem to be favorites.

One reason is that they are friendlier.

Dogs enjoy being with humans, but cats seem to enjoy being alone.

Also, we can teach dogs how to do things, but cats don't seem interested in learning how to do anything.

Why are these popular pets so different?

Humans chose qualities in dogs that they wanted and bred more dogs that would have these

qualities.

For example, dogs are friendly because humans made sure that friendly dogs would create more friendly dogs.

This is how they changed wild dogs into friendly ones.

Humans and dogs have always had a close relationship, and dogs like to make humans

happy.Cats, however, are never treated this way, so they are truly wild animals that have chosen to be part of human lives.

They come near humans because mice are always around humans, and cats like to eat mice.

Humans do not choose cats; cats choose humans and don't care if humans are happy with

them.For dogs, humans are their masters.

For cats, humans are their equals.

Humans just have to decide which kind of relationship they wish to have, and they will be

happy with either a dog or a cat.

Which do you prefer? Questions:1. Why do most Americans like dogs better?2. Why are dogs friendly to humans?3. What is special about cats?4. What is one of the differences between cats and dogs?
